Overview

Information systems are seen to play a vital role in our daily lives — they improve the quality of human life significantly. In order to research, design and develop information systems, there is no question that we need experts in computing with new ideas, a better understanding of the world, with research and development skills. METU NCC MS program is designed to educate highly skilled computer engineers and scientists with both research and technical background. Research skills will better help them understand the world and act accordingly and their education will help them better apply their knowledge and skills in solving real-world computing problems.

The mission of the Master of Computer Engineering program at METU NCC is to educate future computer scientists and engineers by enhancing the knowledge of computing with research, theory and practice and by advancing the community and society with technological advances in computer science and engineering.

Programme structure

The CNG MS program focuses on educating advance computer science and engineering topics as well as graduating students that are excellent in research. The department has strong research groups with strong international and national collaborations. These collaborations are the key driving force of the research in the program. The department also has strong ties and very close collaborations with industry. The Department’s current research strengths are in Distributed Systems and Networking, Performance Modelling, Parallel Algorithms/Systems, Human/Computer Interaction, Software Engineering, Service-Oriented Computing, Modelling and Simulation, Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, Internet of Things, and Web-centric Computing.

The CNG MS program consists of 7 technical elective courses, two seminar courses — one in research topic and the other one of research methods and ethics, and thesis research, which must add up to at least 21 credits. One of the elective courses has to be from systems area and one has to be from theory area. Six elective courses are planned to be completed in the first year. Although it is highly recommended to select a Thesis advisor, and form a Thesis committee with his/her guidance by the end of the first semester, it is conceivable this process extends into the second semester. The elective courses can either be taken during the first semester or the second as long as the prerequisite requirement of the intended course is satisfied. The seminar course involves seminars given by instructors and students. The program typically lasts two years for full-time students.

Career opportunities

Information technologies play a vital role in everyday life and in many sectors including communication, education, banking, health, defence, and the production industry. Therefore, graduates from METU NCC CNG MSc Program will have very good career prospects both at home and abroad in various private and public sector organizations. More specifically, our graduates will be eligible for jobs in computer centres of the large banks and multinational companies and, of course, in information technology (IT) companies. Our graduates will also have the opportunity of postgraduate study leading to PhD in or outside of Turkey.
